Just like that, the last league game of the season is upon us. Celtic have won the Premiership once again and will be lifting the trophy in front of their home fans. It will also be the occasion we see quite a few players don the famous green-and-white jersey for the last time. Will that be the case with Greg Taylor?
Taylor was signed by Celtic from Kilmarnock in the summer of 2019. Incidentally, he was brought in as the replacement for Kieran Tierney.
With Tierney set to return from Arsenal this summer, as a free agent, it looks like Taylor's time at Celtic Park might be coming to an end. Brendan Rodgers has made it no secret that he wants the left-back to stay but with no extension being announced so far, one has to imagine that he is on his way out this summer.
In many ways, it is a similar situation to that of Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool. The club hero was booed by his own supporters at Anfield recently. Hopefully, Celtic will avoid doing the same when it comes to Taylor.
Chris Sutton backs Celtic fans to avoid Liverpool controversy
Chris Sutton wrote regarding the situation in his column on the Daily Record:
"I’m thinking about the Greg Taylor situation. It looks like he is leaving at the end of term but I hope he gets a good send off.
You can’t tell fans what to think these days but you look at the disappointing reaction Trent Alexander-Arnold received from Liverpool fans the other day, when he got booed by a section of the support.
It was harsh considering the service he’d given the club and the fact he’s off to Real Madrid.
But I don’t think there will be anything like that for Taylor at Parkhead. The vast majority of fans appreciate the efforts he’s put in over the years and the role he’s played in the club’s success."
At 27 years of age, Taylor has every right to want to play every week. Unfortunately, it might not do that with Tierney returning to Celtic in the summer. So, one can understand the reasoning behind his wanting to leave this summer. It appears to be for footballing reasons more than anything else.
Most Celtic fans will understand that and hopefully wish Taylor well if he does end up leaving this summer. So often, he has not gotten the credit that he deserves. If this is farewell, let's give him one worth remembering.
