There are a number of players that Celtic have been linked with in recent times. The Hoops have been successful in signing only a few of them though while others have either remained with their teams or gone elsewhere. And it is safe to say that that will continue to be the case in upcoming transfer windows as well.

One position where there has not been much long-term stability at Celtic is goalkeeper. Joe Hart was always viewed as a short-term solution although he did have a three-year run as the number one for the Hoops.

When Hart retired, Celtic brought someone even older than him. Kasper Schmeichel has proven the doubters wrong though and already signed a one-year extension.

Most fans will be hoping that Celtic's next goalkeeper is a long-term solution and not another short-term fix. Caoimhin Kelleher of Liverpool is someone who has been linked with the club for years now but a move has not materialised. And now, Chelsea have been tipped to make a move for him.

The goalkeeping situation has been a problem for Chelsea ever since Thibaut Courtois left. Edouard Mendy had a decent run, even winning the Champions League, but it was very brief. Right now, both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have far too many mistakes in them and do not look like top-class goalkeepers.

As reported by Football Insider, former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson said:

"Robert Sanchez for me is not a Chelsea goalkeeper in a Champions League team if that’s where they want to be.

“Playing out from the back, the errors leading to goals, he’s up there with some of the highest numbers in the Premier League.

“Chelsea are two players, two positions light for me, the most important two on the pitch, number nine and the goalkeeper.

“That’s where they should have invested.

“Kelleher is a good goalkeeper and he’s going to move on from Liverpool.

“He’ll be hugely disappointed because he’s given his [all], the services he’s given Liverpool, the opportunities that he’s had, he’s never let them down.

“He’s developed as a goalkeeper, but the money that they’re going to get is pure profit.

“He’s out of contract at the end of next season, not this season, so everything points to an exit for him.

“Is Chelsea an obvious choice? It’s not an obvious choice, but Chelsea are going to recruit.

“Chelsea do need a goalkeeper. What would he cost? 20, 25 million.

“If Liverpool are to get a profit for him, it’s going to be this summer."

For many Celtic fans, Kelleher would be the dream goalkeeper signing. He has done brilliantly for Liverpool whenever given a chance but has not been handed the starting spot despite that.

He is expected to leave Liverpool soon. But if or when he does, one would expect plenty of high-profile clubs to come calling and realistically, Celtic might not have a real chance of signing the Irishman even if they wanted.
