Celtic made a number of signings in the summer and quite a good number of them seem to be having a positive impact so far. One who has exceeded most expectations is Kasper Schmeichel. The Leicester City legend was brought in as a free agent and has proven himself to be more than good enough to be the Hoops' number one, following the retirement of Joe Hart.
For all of Schmeichel's qualities, he is not the long-term solution in that area of the pitch for Celtic though. It has been quite a while since they have had one.
Caoimhin Kelleher of Liverpool is someone Celtic have been linked with for years now. A move has never materialised though. And now, it looks like the transfer fee might be well out of their reach.
As reported by The Sun, Chelsea are plotting a summer move for Kelleher. Liverpool aren’t keen to see such a good player join a potential title rival but if the Blues match the £35 million transfer valuation, they might be left with little choice. Juventus and Napoli are both monitoring the Irishman as well but he is believed to prefer the option of staying in the Premier League.
Chelsea plotting summer move for long-term Celtic target
No matter which way you look at it, Kelleher ending up at Celtic feels pretty unlikely. There is no way they could meet that valuation. Even half that figure would be tough and a club-record fee.
Of course, that is not the end of the world for Celtic. There are definitely good goalkeepers out there, who can be brought in for transfer fees they are willing to shell out.
They might not be as good as Kelleher though. The Liverpool goalie is arguably the best backup option in the world, and is unlucky to have Alisson Becker ahead of him.
