It's safe to say that Celtic's recruitment has been lacklustre. Despite players like Joel Mvuka and Michel-Ange Balikwisha coming through the door, none of the signings have hit the heights that were expected of them.
Now, Charlie Mulgrew thinks that plays a major part in why Celtic have been struggling this season.
Speaking on Open Goal, he said: "I think it’s a mixture of everything. The players aren’t great. The players who have been signed haven’t helped that are there.
"Players like Callum McGregor need help. Players like Alistair Johnston being injured, so the likes of Scales needs help. I thought Scales was brilliant at the start of the season. These players need to be helped, and they haven’t been helped.
"Hatate, he has come into form a wee bit recently, but even players like that, Maeda, they need better players to come into the building to make them better and improve the team. That hasn’t been done. So, you are now relying on the same old players."
Is recruitment Celtic's biggest problems?
Recruitment could be Celtic's biggest problem. Out of the many signings that the Hoops made in the summer, many players don't play regularly or have already left the club. The list includes: Balikwisha, Shin Yamada, Hayato Inamura, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, and more.
Although things may not look great right now, there are promising signs for the future. Martin O'Neill will be on his way out of the club at the end of the season, but he revealed in February that Celtic are working on a better system.
He said: "I am sure that the new manager coming in, and Celtic should be on the search now, should be looking and have his own scouting system up and running.
"There will be a more robust look at how we approach the transfer market. Sometimes it does go to the last minute, but it’s about having things in place and up and running, not like last year.
"I don’t know [who will replace Paul Tisdale], but I assume that some sort of structure will come in that takes all of that into consideration."
Hopefully, the changes will be effective. If there's any time that the Hoops need a good recruitment system, it's going to be in the summer. Under a new manager, there should be a lot of new players through the door, so we need to make sure that they properly fit the bill.
