This was supposed to be the summer that everything changed for the Rangers. They had new investors in place and to be fair, they did spend a decent bit of money in the transfer market. But despite that, somehow, it looks like the Ibrox club have taken several steps back, with Celtic already nine points ahead of them in the league title race.
Russell Martin was appointed as their manager very recently but after just five games, it looks like the majority of the Ibrox support want to see him being shown the exit door. He has four draws and a defeat in the league and also coached them to a 9-1 aggregate loss at the hands of Club Brugge in the Champions League qualifiers.
The Rangers fans seem to be making things only tougher for the manager though, who is believed to have the support of the board for now. Thousands of their supportes gathered outside of Ibrox this weekend and chanted for Martin to be sacked.
It would be safe to say that that does not make things any easier for the Rangers. On the other hand, Celtic have the chance to pull further ahead as the Ibrox club continue to stumble and fall.
Celtic will love what Rangers supporters have just done
If there was any hope that Martin would turn things around, it might be over now. The fans have had their say and in situations like this, there is only one conclusion, which is for the manager to be sacked.
Expect this to drag on for a little while longer though, as did the Neil Lennon situation at Celtic. But unless there are some remarkable turn of events, there is every chance that Martin's going to be shown the exit door at some point in the near future.
Also, what message does this send to potential replacements? Who would want to come to Ibrox knowing that fans could hold protests after just five league games of you in the job? That certainly does not feel like an attractive post to take over, especially as the club look set to sack their fourth manager in four seasons.
