It would be safe to say that the primary reason Celtic are in a comfortable position this season, despite their poor summer transfer window and underwhelming performances, is because of how bad the Rangers have been. It has been one of the worst starts in the Ibrox club's history with Russell Martin becoming their first manager in 47 years to not win any of his first five games in charge.
Naturally, there have been plenty of calls from their support for him to be sacked, even though it is just mid-September. And after the recent protests outside of Ibrox, it feels like there is a sense of inevitability around that decision, the same that was the case for Mick Beale, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Philippe Clement, although those situations dragged on for a bit as well.
As for Martin, it looks like the Rangers are in a tough spot. He was appointed just this summer and sacking him already will cost them a decent sum of money. There have been suggestions that the figure is close to £2 million.
As a result, one would expect the Rangers to give him every chance to succeed. And the change in the media coverage of his situation after their win at the weekend does suggest that there is a hope Martin could be in the Ibrox hot seat for the time being, which Celtic fans would view as good news.
Celtic will love latest update on Russell Martin and Rangers
Many are wondering if the decision to bring back Nico Raskin into the fold will prove as a sliding doors moment for Martin at Rangers. Others think it does give him a chance to succeed at Ibrox. And at the very least, the Hibernian win gives him some breathing space.
It is pretty easy to judge the situation of a manager by the media coverage around him. And coming out of this weekend, it feels like the aim is to rebuild the Martin era.
It remains to be seen if the Rangers go on a run from here. But if they stumble a few more times, it is more than likely that he would be shown the exit door, sadly for Celtic.
