With merely days left in the January transfer window, it would come as a surprise if Celtic are able to pull off all the deals that they need between now and the end of it. To put it simply, Martin O'Neill has been let down by the board, just like Brendan Rodgers was before him. In an ideal world, the squad should have been strengthened significantly for the important European game against FC Utrecht at Parkhead, but there is not even a substantial rumour about an impending move right now.
Celtic's recruitment team needs a shakeup, that is for sure. They have shown time and again that they are not good enough, whether it comes to identifying the right players or getting deals over the line.
For now, let's just hope that some deals can be completed in time. Another striker is absolutely necessary. Perhaps a centre-back as well. There were talks about bringing in a new winger as well but those noises have faded away.
Amid all this, it looks like a left-back is now on their radar. As reported by Football Insider, Celtic and Sunderland are eyeing moves for Lecce defender Antonino Gallo.
Celtic want to sign Italian defender impressing in Serie A
When Kieran Tierney was brought back, it was with the knowledge that they will need a cover option for him. The Scottish international has had a poor fitness record over the years and needs to be rested on a consistent basis.
Unfortunately, Celtic's load management plans have fallen apart due to the lack of a proper backup option. Greg Taylor would have been ideal but he left in the summer. On the other hand, while Marcelo Saracchi has impressed when playing, he has had an injury-hit campaign, meaning Tierney has had to play constant football.
Fortunately, Tierney has remained injury-free, which is a brilliant sign. But in the long run, Celtic do need to provide him with cover. Will Gallo be that guy?
