There are a number of areas where Celtic need to strengthen. One of them is believed to be between the posts. Kasper Schmeichel was pretty good early on in his run at Parkhead but his form has dipped in recent months, going back to the end of last season. He has been making errors at an increasing rate, especially at the European level.
Viljami Sinisalo is someone many fans believe is good enough to be a Celtic starter. That being said, considering how many goalkeepers they have been linked with in recent days, it looks like the club at the very least want the youngster to face some competition.
One of the players they have been linked with is Illan Meslier of Leeds United. But cold water has been poured over their chances of signing him this winter.
As reported by TEAMtalk, Celtic’s attempts to sign Meslier on a free transfer in January are likely to be rejected. Leeds United are still hoping to get a small fee out of his exit.
Celtic want to sign Leeds United player for free in January
Meslier's downward trajectory has been rapid to say the least. He was a regular starter for Leeds United for so many years and has played in more than 200 games for the club. But right now, he suddenly finds himself as the third-choice goalkeeper at the club.
At one point, Leeds United could have gotten a big fee out of his exit, with clubs like Chelsea and Barcelona being linked with Meslier in the past. His current deal runs out at the end of the season and it is very likely that he will leave, whether that be in the winter or next summer as a free agent.
Meslier is someone who is prone to making errors though. So, Celtic need to be completely sure before making a move for the Frenchman.
