Celtic have a lot of options in the middle of the park right now. Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate are proven in the middle of the park while Arne Engels, Paulo Bernardo and Luke McCowan seem to be vying for the third spot. Odin Thiago Holm's future at Parkhead seems uncertain though and considering his lack of playing time since arriving last year, an exit might be inevitable soon.
If there is one role that remains unfilled in the Celtic midfield though, it is defensive midfield. Tomoki Iwata left in the summer to join Birmingham City and was not replaced.
The issue is, Celtic do not need a traditional defensive midfielder in domestic games. But they could certainly do with one at the Champions League level, when they are on the back foot against a number of teams.
As a result, although they have been linked with Wataru Endo of Liverpool recently, signing a youngster in that position might be a better idea. Brendan Rodgers would not need to play him in every game, allowing for flexibility depending on the level of opposition.
Celtic want to sign 21-year-old Ajax midfielder
As reported by Gianluca Di Marzio, Benjamin Tahirovic will leave Ajax. Lazio likes the Bosnian midfielder and he could be an idea for Fiorentina. PAOK and Celtic are interested in him as well. His priority, however, would be to return to Serie A.
It remains to be seen how things play out in the race to sign Tahirovic from Ajax. But it looks like Celtic are one of the teams involved.
Tahirovic was at AS Roma before joining Ajax last year. Unfortunately for the Bosnian international, he has barely gotten any playing time this season and it might be time for a change in scenery already. Could Parkhead be his next destination?
