Celtic vs Beşiktaş match preview

Even by Celtic's usual disastrous standards, this European campaign has been horrendous. If the Hoops are going to stay alive in the Europa League, this is surely must win. So far in the league phase, the Hoops have played three and lost three, beaten by Ferencváros and Celta Vigo in Glasgow, as well as being demolished 4-1 by Benfica at Estádio da Luz.

A fortnight ago, they actually took the lead against O Celtiña, Mika Baur on target, but conceded twice in just three minutes and were beaten by the side from Northern Spain.

Domestically, things are not going much better either. On Sunday, the Celts were beaten 2-0 by Falkirk, four days after being booed off, following a 2-2 draw with Dundee United at home. A sequence of just three wins in ten has ramped up the pressure on beloved manager Martin O'Neill, ahead of the upcoming international break.

Since the introduction of the league phase, no side in the Europa League has lost each of their first three matches and still reached the knockout stages. Thus, were Celtic to lose this one, a top 24 finish would surely prove beyond them, if that is not the case already.

In contrast, Beşiktaş are flying high, having picked up seven points out of nine. On matchday three, the Black Eagles played out an exciting 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in İstanbul; Wilfried Ndidi and Junior Olaitan the scorers.

Before that, they smashed Olympique Marseille 4-1 at home, before earning a memorable 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim in Germany; Oh Hyeon-gyu scoring twice in Sinsheim. Domestically, things are not going quite as well, throwing away a 2-0 lead to only draw with Kasımpaşa on Sunday, thereby fourth in the Süper Lig, having won just one and lost three of their five away games thus far.

Nevertheless, considering their own team's horrendous form, no Celtic fan will be feeling confident.

Martin O'Neill remains without Alistair Johnston, Auston Trusty, Yang Hyun-jun and Joël van den Berg due to injury, while Jota is not in the UEFA squad, so cannot feature. Cameron Carter-Vickers did start at Falkirk on Sunday, his return a boost, while Benjamin Nygren could be back in the XI, having been dropped.

In attack, Kasper Høgh's wait for a first goal since scoring a hat-trick at Kilmarnock in August goes on, so Camilo Durán will continue to lead the attack.

Centre-back Ümit Akdağ's red card against Crystal Palace means he is suspended, while captain Orkun Kökçü, Fabio Miretti and Ernest Poku are sidelined. Former Rangers winger Václav Černý is back in Glasgow, having got himself in to trouble celebrating an Old Firm win two seasons ago.

Weekend scorers Leandro Trossard and Dušan Vlahović could complete the forward line, although the latter may well make way for Oh Hyeon-gyu. The Korean international was something of a super sub at Celtic, 41 of his 47 appearances coming off the bench, netting 12 times, which was a goal every 110 minutes. So far this season, Oh has scored four times for Beşiktaş, of which three have come in Europe, and it feels inevitable he will score here, doesn't it?

Predicted Line-ups

  • Celtic predicted lineup: Johnstone; Donovan, Carter-Vickers, Scales, Tierney; McGregor, Baur, Nygren; Hassan, Osmand, Durán.
  • Beşiktaş predicted lineup: Nübel; Murillo, Agbadou, Djaló, Ouattara; Ndidi, Yılmaz, Özcan; Černý, Trossard, Oh Hyeon-gyu.

  • Score prediction: Celtic 0-2 Beşiktaş.
