It is not often that you see Celtic and Manchester United have the same targets during the summer transfer window. But it looks like one of those rare occasions has come up now. Both clubs have a striker on their radar and it remains to be seen where he will end up. As a free agent, he has the ability to pick his next destination.
The player we are talking about is none other than Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The England international is without a contract this summer, having seen his deal with Everton run out.
There appears to be plenty of interest in his signature though, from all around Europe. Celtic and Manchester United are not the only clubs trying to bring him in.
As reported by CaughtOffside, Manchester United are seriously considering a move for Calvert-Lewin. The former Everton striker is also wanted by Celtic, plus unnamed clubs in the Bundesliga, MLS, and the Saudi Pro League.
Celtic handed transfer blow by Manchester United news
It is not hard to see why clubs want Calvert-Lewin. At his best, he is a striker who scored consistent goals in the Premier League and was a handful for the opposition defences.
In the 20/21 campaign, he scored 21 goals in 39 appearances and found the back of the net against teams like Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, while scoring hat-tricks against West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion. That was Calvert-Lewin at the peak of his powers.
That being said, there are multiple reasons why clubs should be careful before making a move for Calvert-Lewin. The first is his injury record. He has only played more than 30 games once in the previous four seasons.
Also, his recent goalscoring record is nothing to write home about. Over those four seasons, he has scored a combined 18 goals.
At the top of his game, Calvert-Lewin would score a lot of goals for Celtic. But even at 28 years of age, it feels like he is far past his best days on the pitch. The reality is, the 20/21 version of the striker might no longer exist.
