It is always nice to see former Celtic players step into the world of management once their playing careers come to an end. There are definitely some who end up enjoying success. But then, managing is arguably the toughest job that exists in football. So, there are plenty of others who struggle to find their feet.
That rings especially true in modern football. Patience is hard to come by, even at the lower levels of the game. Barry Robson is the latest to learn that.
After a one-year spell as Aberdeen manager, Robson took a step down and joined Raith Rovers as manager. But that spell has lasted less than eleven months.
Raith Rovers have sacked Robson as manager. They were on a bad run of form for sure but even then, they were sitting at sixth in the Scottish Championship table and were just three points away from the third spot. So, many would feel that this is a harsh decision and the former Celtic man should have been given more time.
Celtic title winner officially sacked as manager
Robson did not have a long playing career at Celtic. He spent a couple of years with the Hoops and won two trophies, including the league. He would also go on to win the Scottish League Cup with Aberdeen later in his career. At an individual level, he was Middlesbrough's Player of the Season on one occasion.
One interesting thing about Robson is that he spent time in the youth ranks of Rangers. But he would go on to play for Celtic at the senior level, having failed to break through into the first-team for the Ibrox club.
At the international level, he represented Scotland on 17 occasions. Now, it remains to be seen what the next step for him in management turns out to be. Having not really excelled in the Scottish Championship, it is hard to imagine that any top flight clubs would be lining him up. Perhaps going the coaching route and building up his reputation a bit more might make sense.
