In recent years, we have seen a number of Scottish players head to Serie A and do well in Italy. This has encouraged Italian sides to keep a keener eye on Premiership talents. Celtic will know that. Atalanta were linked with Matt O'Riley last summer and Arne Engels this time. Reo Hatate seems to be on the radar of Udinese as well.
On the other hand, there are some Scottish players for whom things have not gone according to plan. One of them has to be Josh Doig.
Doig left Hibernian in 2022 to join Hellas Verona. From there, he ended up in Sassuolo and found himself playing Serie B football last season. Now, he could be eyeing a return to Scotland.
A transfer rumour has now emerged almost out of nowhere. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Graeme Bailey has suggested that Celtic want Doig this summer. Several other clubs are believed to be interested in the left-back as well.
Celtic tipped to sign Scottish international out of nowhere
Doig had been on the radar of Celtic back in his days at Hibernian. Could they end up going for the Scottish left-back this summer? It certainly looks like it could happen.
Celtic do need to sign a left-back this summer. Greg Taylor seems to be closing in on an exit, while there is very little hope that Jeffrey Schlupp will return for a permanent run either. So, it is more than likely that they will need to bring in a fresh face as backup for Kieran Tierney.
Will Doig be that player? We will find out soon. A few other left-backs have been linked with Celtic as well, including Peterborough United's Harley Mills. With quite a few months left in the window, expect other names to crop up over the coming weeks.
