The belief is that Celtic will aim to strengthen all across the pitch in the upcoming summer transfer window. We have seen signs of that through the players they have been linked with. Defensive midfielders like Wataru Endo, Kalidou Sidibe and Elvis Rexhbecaj are believed to be on their radar. At the same time, they seem to be monitoring wingers such as Sondre Orjeseater and Michel-Ange Balikwisha. In defence, a pre-contract with Kieran Tierney has been agreed.
There have been some suggestions that Celtic could look to add to their ranks between the goalposts as well. Right now, Viljami Sinisalo is filling in for Kasper Schmeichel, who is out injured.
At the end of the day, Schmeichel is 38 years old. Then, there is this recent shoulder injury. Could it have a long-term impact on the goalkeeper's performances moving forward? He has one more year on his contract, but sooner or later, the club will need to find a replacement for him.
If the right goalkeeper is available this summer, especially as a free agent, it might be worth considering making a move now rather than waiting another year. Could an Argentine international be the answer?
Celtic tipped to sign Argentine international as free agent
In a Glasgow World article listing free agents Celtic and Rangers could go after this summer, one of the names put forward was that of Walter Benitez. The 32-year-old currently plays for PSV and his current deal is set to run out in the summer.
Benitez is a regular starter for PSV. Before that, he spent six seasons with OGC Nice and made almost 200 appearances for the French Ligue 1 club. He made his full debut for Argentina last year as well. So, there is little doubt about his quality.
Someone like him could be a solid signing for Celtic. Yes, he is 32 years old but goalkeepers tend to play for longer. So, a move would make a ton of sense.
