Over the last few days, all the transfer rumours around Celtic have been regarding wingers and left-backs. Admittedly, both are positions where the Hoops need to make additions. Then again, there are other areas in need of reinforcements as well. Ones that are not getting as much focus, at least in the media. Centre-back is amongst them.
Since the departure of Carl Starfelt, Celtic have not been able to find a regular centre-back partner for Cameron Carter-Vickers. The hope was that Auston Trusty would fill those shoes, having been signed from Sheffield United for a £6 million fee last summer.
But Trusty's performance levels were shaky at best. By the end of the season, he was on the bench with Liam Scales back as a starter.
With Gustaf Lagerbielke, Stephen Welsh and Maik Nawrocki all expected to leave this summer, Celtic will need to strengthen at centre-back. And a great option might be available as a free agent.
Celtic tipped to sign £25m England international for free
In a list of realistic Premier League free agents compiled by 67 Hail Hail, Michael Keane was included. His contract at Everton is running out this summer.
It has been suggested that Everton are in talks with Keane over a contract extension. But having lost his place in the starting XI last season, the 12-cap England international is expected to leave as a free agent.
Still just 32 years of age, Keane could be an excellent free agent signing for Celtic. He joined Everton in the summer of 2017 for a £25 million transfer fee. Since then, he has made over 200 appearances for the Toffees and is an established Premier League centre-back.
As far as free agent signings go, Celtic cannot expect for much more than Keane. It remains to be seen whether they do end up making an attempt to sign him this summer or not.
