Celtic centre-back Stephen Welsh has sent a message to Hoops fans ahead of his move to Swansea City, The 26-year-old is headed South after struggling for regular game time at Parkhead.

Welsh came through the Celtic academy,, initially graduating to the first team in 2019, but he has since completed a couple of loan spells, including two different spells with Motherwell over the last two seasons.

The defender impressed with Motherwell and has now caught the eye of Championship club Swansea, who he will join on a free transfer after agreeing to end his Celtic contract early.

Welsh thanks Celtic fans

Writing on social media, Welsh confirmed the move by sending a message of thanks to the Hoops and the club's fans. He wrote: "Celtic has always been a massive part of my life. Being able to live your dream is something I would never take for granted. 18 years of ups, downs and special moments that so few have the privilege to experience.

“I would like to thank every staff member and player who have been part of this journey. The work behind the scenes from an early age until now doesn’t go unnoticed. I would also like to thank my family who, without them, none of this wouldn’t have been possible.

“And finally to the fans. You follow the team everywhere we go and support us through thick and thin. A special mention to Green Brigade and Bhoys. You’re there and you’re always there. Although sometimes things can be tough on and off the pitch you stick by the team through it all. It’s been a real pleasure. Thank you.”

Welsh will have a much-needed fresh start down South having struggled to convince at Celtic over recent times. He racked up 43 league appearances in the green and white, and was at least part of four Premiership title-winning campaigns, along with two Scottish Cups and three League Cups.

At Swansea, Welsh - whose name certainly fits the move - will be hoping to aid a playoff push, with Vitor Matos expected to mount a playoff push in his first full season in charge.

The Swans finished last season well under Matos but will be disappointed to have finished 11th, especially having had possession of the Championship golden boot winner.

They will be hoping for better next season in a Championship campaign that will actually include three Welsh clubs for the first time since the 1980/81 season.
