Celtic assistant Shaun Maloney has explained the midfield issue the Bhoys must get right on Thursday night against Celta Vigo.

It's a huge clash for Celtic, who need to pick up some sort of points return, if not all three points, given they have lost each of their first two games, but the same applies for Celta, who have also struggled in the Europa League so far.

Celta, who are eighth in LaLiga as things stand, actually led Italian giants Juventus in their last outing in this competition, but they ultimately lost 2-1, which included a stoppage time winner.

Celtic need to press home their home advantage given they are, on paper, inferior to their visitors, but the gap isn't significant enough to go into the game with fear, which might have been the case against Benfica.

But there are tactical aspects that Celtic are going to have to get right if they want to come away with all three points, and assistant Maloney, who filled in for Martin O'Neill in the pre-match press conference, highlighted a key midfield factor.

Asked if Celtic are still working out their system for European games, he responded: "Not so much the individuals, I'd say just the structure that we put them in. I think that's something we've been trying to figure out all season. At times, we get it right, it looks really good, and then there's been certain matches away from home in Europe that it's looked harder.

"We have to figure that out and we have to do that pretty quickly into tomorrow because the way that Celta play is a really open midfield. We want to limit that as much as we can.

"It's not always on the midfield. I think the players ahead of them have to be part of that. It's not just the midfield three, it's the guys in front of them as well that have a big say on how that looks.

"You've heard me say it a few times, we have to be committed, everyone. When we do, we've shown we can beat some pretty good sides in Europe."

Celtic have struggled in midfield against better sides this season, and not just in Europe. It's clear they are short of a dominant midfielder, but they are going to have to find a way to get more out of what they have, at least until the January window.
