Celtic see bid rejected for possible Daizen Maeda replacement as "negotiations continue"

Are Celtic trying to sign an actually new player? I can't believe it either

Celtic are now the only current Scottish Premiership club yet to have made a new signing so far this summer, with just 31 days to go until the Hoops begin their Premiership title defence against Dundee. Now though, there are signs that the recruitment team have returned from an extended holiday and are open for business... belatedly.

As reported by Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports, Celtic are "in talks" to sign Qarabağ striker Camilo Durán. They add that the two clubs "were initially far apart on valuation, but negotiations continue". Well, reports in Azerbaijan claim that the Celts' initial bid of £1.7 million was rejected, with the Baku-based club valuing their centre-forward at between £2 million and £2.5 million. Thus, if Celtic really want to get this deal over the line, that should not be too much of an obstacle.

After spending his youth career at Independiente Medellín in his native Colombia and then briefly Flamengo, Durán bounced around lower league football in Portugal, featuring Lusitânia and Estrela da Amadora's youth team. He then scored just five goals for Portimonense in Portugal's second-tier, before making the left field decision to move to Azerbaijan, but this has seen his career really take off.

Durán scored 15 times for the Horseman last season, including a first-ever senior hat-trick against Karvan İK in April. However, it was his Champions League form that caught the eye, with the Colombian netting five times as Qarabağ reached the knockout stages for the very first time.

He was on target during the famous comeback victory over Benfica at Estádio da Luz, bagging a brace as his side beat Frankfurt in Baku, as well as scoring against Ajax and when his team exited the competition at St James' Park against Newcastle. Thus, still only 24 years old, he is clearly talented, but is far from a guarantee of goals, were he to swap to banks of the Caspian Sea for Glasgow.

Well, Celtic will need to add plenty of firepower to their ranks, especially considering that Daizen Maeda is highly-likely to leave. After Japan's World Cup exit against Brazil, the forward said that the tournament "made me realise that I can't stay at my current level", further suggesting that he'll be on the move. Could Durán fill Maeda's rather large void? Well, that remains to be seen, but for starters it is just exciting to discover that the Celtic board are aware that the transfer window is indeed open.
