All the talk lately has been about Celtic's search for a new manager, and understandably so, with Brendan Rodgers leaving the club in the middle of the season. Martin O'Neill and Shaun Maloney are in interim charge of the team and have made a bright start, including a win over the Rangers to book their place in the final of the Scottish League Cup. Sooner or later, they will need to find a long-term and permanent solution though.
That being said, one cannot allow this managerial search to result in overlooking the issues with the squad. It is one of the biggest reasons why Celtic are in the position that they are in right now.
They need to bring in some quality in the winter. And to be honest, we do not know what to make of the latest transfer rumour surrounding the club.
As reported by The Herald, Celtic are contemplating a bid for David Watson in the January window. His contract with Kilmarnock runs out at the end of the season.
Celtic plotting bid for 20-year-old midfielder in January
There is no doubt that Watson is a very highly rated talent. That being said, is he the solution to Celtic's problems at the moment? We do not think so.
It is unlikely that the 20-year-old will come in and start for Celtic. It is much more likely that he will have a squad role, just like Luke McCowan. And if everything goes perfectly according to plan, perhaps he will develop into a starter some day.
Signing someone like Watson for a bargain fee would be smart. At the same time, Celtic will also need to bring in some proven quality and experience if they want to turn things around for themselves. Let's see if they do that this winter.
