There are quite a few players at Celtic right now who are not getting much player time in Brendan Rodgers' time. As a result, with the January transfer window fast approaching, they might look to use the Parkhead exit door next month. And in the case of many, it might be the best for both parties involved.
It has been a long time since someone came through the Celtic academy and became a regular starter for the club. The last one to do that successfully was Stephen Welsh.
For a while, it had looked like Welsh could have been that player. He got a decent bit of playing time in the second half of the 2020/21 season, when Celtic finished trophyless.
The following summer, Ange Postecoglou was appointed as manager and Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt were signed. It would be safe to say that Welsh has never really been viewed as a starter since then. And now, it could be the right time to make an exit.
Celtic player ready to hold talks about Parkhead exit
As reported by the Daily Mail, Welsh is set to go out in search of first-team football in January. He plans to talk with Rodgers about his long-term prospects.
To be honest, it might be for the best if Welsh did leave Celtic at this point in his career. He has not developed into the kind of player who you would think would be able to start regular for the Hoops at centre-back.
There has been plenty of interest in his signature over the years though, from clubs abroad as well. Perhaps in the right team and system, Welsh could do a job and go on to have a decent career. Let's see how things turn out for him over the coming month or so.
