While there is a lot of curiosity around Celtic's chase for a new permanent manager, following Brendan Rodgers' unexpected resignation, one cannot lose sight of the fact that it is going to be extremely important for them to sign the right players in the January transfer window as well. Nobody is going to come in and magically transform the situation at Parkhead, unless provided with the correct circumstances.
It is safe to say that Celtic need to strengthen in multiple areas across the pitch. One of them is between the posts.
Kasper Schmeichel has not been up to the mark for months now. And many Celtic fans believe that the time has come to drop him and play Viljami Sinisalo.
The club might not be willing to do that though. Instead, it appears that they are preparing a move for another veteran goalkeeper, although someone who is considerably younger than Schmeichel.
Celtic planning to make bid for Manchester City player in January
It is a name we have seen being linked with the Hoops in recent months. As reported by the print edition of Star On Sunday (via BBC), Celtic are planning a £500,000 move for Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega in January.
Ortega has had a decent Manchester City career. One could argue that he has exceeded expectations. But after some of the club's recent moves, the time has come for him to part ways. He is no longer even the backup option there.
At 33 years of age, Ortega could still do a job for a lot of teams though. And in recent years, we have seen that Celtic are pretty comfortable when it comes to signing veteran goalkeepers, whether it be as free agents or for low transfer fees. So, do not be surprised if this does happen.
