Celtic are heading towards one of the most important games of their campaign when they take on BSC YB in the UEFA Champions League. If the Hoops are able to win this contest, it will heavily boost their chances of qualifying for the knockout phase of the competition. Their shaky form is a cause for worry though.
Celtic have struggled for consistency over the past couple of months. On the other hand, BSC YB have been shaky this entire season. They are ninth in the Swiss top flight and have also lost all six of their matches so far in the Champions League, leaving them bottom of the 32-team table.
Celtic have confirmed some good news heading into the BSC YB game as well. And hopefully, it will lift the mood of not just the supporters but the dressing room as well.
An extension has been agreed upon. As reported by the club's official website, Celtic have extended its contract with Kasper Schmeichel until the summer of 2026.
Celtic make big announcement before Champions League game
Schmeichel was signed by Celtic in the summer as a free agent. A lot of eyebrows were raised at the idea of replacing the retiring Joe Hart between the posts with someone even older than him.
Schmeichel has proven the doubters wrong though and shown that he is still a very capable goalkeeper. He has taken on a leadership role as well, the importance of which cannot be overlooked considering it is a squad filled with youngsters. Most fans will be happy that the Danish international has been handed an extension.
That being said, sooner or later, Celtic will need to sign a long-term goalkeeper. It fills like a void that they have been filling on a temporary basis for a while now. Whether that be with Hart, Schmeichel or Fraser Forster before them.
