Celtic make approach for Chelsea coach out of nowhere

Celtic have made an approach for the Chelsea coach out of nowhere, as they look to revamp the setup following Brendan Rodgers' exit.

Celtic might have brought in Martin O'Neill and Shaun Maloney to take interim charge of the team following Brendan Rodgers' resignation, but one would hope that it is not a long-term thing. It is important that they have a new manager in place before the January transfer window in order to give him a chance to rebuild the squad in his own vision.

Of course, a large section of the fanbase would like to see Ange Postecoglou make a return to Celtic Park. The Australian is without a club at the moment and would be perfect. But he is not the only candidate. Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town and Robbie Keane of Ferencvaros have been linked as well, and are believed to be on the Hoops' shortlist for the post.

On the other hand, it is not just about finding the next manager. The club's coaching structure might be about to undergo a revamp as well with John Kennedy leaving after 27 years at Parkhead.

As reported by The 42 (via 67 Hail Hail), Celtic have requested permission to speak to Chelsea about Calum McFarlane joining the coaching set-up at Parkhead. He is the Blues' Under-21s head coach right now.

McFarlane is very highly rated. So, he seems to be someone whom the club believe could be a good addition to their coaching setup, whoever the next manager turns out to be.

It remains to be seen if Celtic are successful in bringing him in from Chelsea or not. But most of the fans' focus will surely be on who the next manager will.

This is a sign though that Celtic are looking to put a coaching team in place, even without having the next manager. Of course, this is nothing new for the club. Famously, when Postecoglou had joined in 2021, he had come in without any backroom staff.
