The centre-back situation remains a bit of a worry for Celtic. Cameron Carter-Vickers is the best that they have available, but he has been linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen. It is believed that the American is focused on the task at hand and not interested in leaving mid-season. But his thoughts could be different when the summer comes around.
On the other hand, there are two centre-backs whose exits seem inevitable. One is Stephen Welsh, who seems to be nearing a loan exit this month.
Another is Maik Nawrocki. The Polish centre-back was signed for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of €5 million in the summer of 2023, a significant figure for a club like Celtic, but has barely featured since then. He is clearly not a major part of Rodgers' plans and an exit feels like the best step forward.
On the other hand, Celtic are being linked with a defensive wonderkid. Rumours doing the rounds online suggest that the club have an eye on Tobias Slotsager.
Celtic linked with Danish centre-back before January window
Slotsager is still 18 years of age but he has already made 59 appearances for Odense BK. He has represented Denmark at multiple youth international levels as well.
As a result, it is safe to say that Slotsager is a defensive prodigy. If Celtic are able to sign him, it would have to be considered as a major coup.
That being said, chances could be hard to come by at Celtic. Centre-back is one of the toughest positions to break into in the senior game. Someone like Slotsager would have to compete with established professionals like Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales and Auston Trusty. It goes without saying that that won't be an easy task, no matter how talented he is.
