Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has done an incredible job this season. He managed to get his side over the line to their 56th league title despite the Hoops struggling throughout the campaign, but he seems to be on his way out now, with a replacement soon to follow.

One person tipped to replace him is Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou. He has done a fantastic job this season and could do brilliant things at Parkhead, but according to an STV journalist, he isn't the person leading the race.

Speaking on the STV Radio Football Show, Ronnie Charters revealed that although Berthel Askou is the bookies' favourite, Robbie Keane seems to be the more likely option. He also confirmed that it is highly unlikely O'Neill will remain in the dugout next campaign.

Charters said: "I don’t think he’ll [O’Neill] be the Celtic manager next year. I know the recruitment process is very much now well and truly wrapped up. But he could still win the double. He’s still got the Scottish Cup final to come.

"The more I speak, the more I hear, the less I maybe think that it’s going to be Jens, who’s the current bookies’ favourite, to take over.

"Toulouse is a possibility. I think that might just be the good old Jedi mind tricks of the people around to try and get his name out there. He’s a manager that’s in demand, basically. And if Celtic want to make their move for him, they’d better be quick. So I think that’s the dark arts of football at play.

"If you asked me to put my mortgage on it right now, and I had to pick someone, I’d think that Robbie Keane is in line ahead of Jens.

Speaking about the possibility of Scott Brown and Keane partnering, he said: "No, that’s not a thing. Yeah, it was only because Scott Brown went over to see him. But he had to do that for his pro licence. Not to say it won’t happen."

The race is on for the next Celtic manager

It's set to be an interesting couple of months as we'll see who takes over from O'Neill as Celtic manager. There are going to be some people unhappy with whoever we get, so an appointment isn't going to come without controversy - that much is inevitable.

Right now, it seems that most supporters would prefer Berthel Askou over Keane. The latter's team, Ferencvaros, just missed out on the league title by one point, so he is under criticism for losing out on the trophy. Berthel Askou has also proven that he can go head-to-head with Premiership teams and record good results, with his side getting points against the likes of Celtic, Rangers and Hearts this season.

Other managerial options could emerge at any point, so nothing is done. O'Neill could even change his mind and stay for another season, so only time will tell how things will pan out for the Celts.
