A treble is on the cards for Celtic once again. Of course, that has not been a rare feat for the club in recent years. It all started with Brendan Rodgers' first stint at Parkhead. And even the Northern Irishman will struggle to match what he achieved in the 2016/17 campaign, going invincible throughout the domestic season.
One player who was a part of that team was Dedryck Boyata. The Belgian international centre-back would leave Celtic in the summer of 2019 in order to join Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga.
After three years in the German top flight, he moved to Club Brugge. And now, he finds himself without a club. It had been reported recently that Belgian side Lommel had offered the 34-year-old a contract.
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Boyata will not be joining Lommel as a free agent this month. The player did hold discussions with the club but no deal was reached.
Celtic Invincible a free agent after refusing to join Belgian club
Boyata has had a solid career and represented Belgium at the international level on a number of occasions as well. But it is safe to say that the success that he enjoyed while at Celtic was unique and not repeated elsewhere.
If Boyata was in the prime of his career or just exiting it, perhaps Celtic might have considered bringing him back for another run. But at 34 years of age, it is hard to imagine that the Hoops would be interested in signing the Belgian.
Do not be surprised if Celtic do end up needing to strengthen their defence in the summer though. There is a possibility that Liam Scales could try to leave after falling behind Auston Trusty in the pecking order. The Irish international is now mostly on the bench.
