It is always difficult to get deals done in the middle of the season. Clubs are not keen to part ways with their best players. At the same time, you often have to compete with heavy interest from other teams as well, who are also in need of strengthening their squads after a disappointing first half to their respective campaigns. So, it remains to be seen how successful Celtic prove to be in meeting their objectives in the market next month.

Celtic definitely need to strengthen their squad as much as possible. Wilfried Nancy was brought in as the manager and started off with four losses on the trot. Since then, he has been able to steady the ship a bit with back-to-back wins, but there were enough worrying signs in those results as well.

At times, Celtic have seemed exposed defensively. So, the club could do with a genuine defensive midfielder alongside Callum McGregor in the middle of the park.

As reported by the Daily Mail (via 67 Hail Hail), Celtic have joined the race for Josh Mulligan. Hibernian are ready to fend off January bids for the midfielder, also wanted by the likes of Nottingham Forest and Leeds United down in England, as well as Lille and Wolfsburg across Europe.

Mulligan has been impressive this season. So, it is not hard to understand why Celtic might be interested in the 23-year-old.

Of course, there are those who might question whether the Hibernian midfielder is good enough to be a starter for Celtic. But there are certainly quite a few talents across the Premiership who are on that level, and perhaps even beyond it.

It is about identifying the right talent. One would hope that is the case with Mulligan. Now, Celtic need to get out and get a deal done ahead of the likes of Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and more.
