It looks like Celtic could sign the Leeds United player in January for free but only on one condition.

This January transfer window is going to be a very interesting one for Celtic. On one hand, the club have to make sure that they make the right additions to their squad to help Wilfried Nancy implement the style of football that he is trying to without the right personnel at this time. On the other hand, there are quite a few who could be headed for the exit door as well.

One position that is in clear need of strengthening is between the posts. Celtic have not had a long-term goalkeeper in many years now.

To be fair, Joe Hart did a decent enough job his entire three-year run at Celtic. Kasper Schmeichel might have starter quite well, perhaps even better than his English predecessor, but the Danish legend's form has been on a steep downward trajectory for months now.

Fans wanted to see Schmeichel get dropped for a while. That happened at the weekend. Viljami Sinisalo was given a chance to start. But even he was not able to impress the supporters. That just goes to show the lack of genuine quality between the posts at Celtic Park right now.

Illan Meslier of Leeds United is someone Celtic have been heavily linked with in recent times. And an unexpected opportunity to sign him for free could open up next month for them.

As reported by The Athletic, a mutual termination of the goalkeeper’s contract could be one possible outcome. That is what happened with Patrick Bamford in August. It might happen again if Leeds United feel compelled to remove Meslier’s wages from their books five months early.

Let's see what the future holds for the Leeds United goalkeeper. Celtic might make a move for him if he is available for free.

Of course, signing Meslier would come with its fair share of risks. Not too long ago, he was being linked with some of the top teams in the Premier League and even Barcelona. Since then, he has dropped down to third choice at Leeds United. There is a reason behind that.

Meslier makes far too many mistakes and had been struggling for a while as Leeds United's starting goalkeeper before he was replaced and dropped down the pecking order. Is that who Celtic want between the posts? To be honest, it feels like a bad idea.
