Newcastle United are a team on the rise, there is no doubt about that. The Magpies ended their long wait for a trophy in the 24/25 season by winning the League Cup. On the other hand, they were also able to secure promotion to the Champions League with a fifth-place finish despite a slow start to the campaign. Now, Eddie Howe will look to strengthen his squad further and it looks like a Celtic hero is in their sights.

Celtic have stuck with veteran goalkeepers for quite some time now, not going after a long-term prospect since the move for Vasilis Barkas did not work out. Joe Hart spent three years between the posts and now, Kasper Schmeichel holds that spot.

Fraser Forster could have been perfect for that role and the Englishman could have further cemented his legacy at Celtic. Instead, he has spent the last three years playing a backup role for Tottenham Hotspur.

He is available as a free agent this summer, after his contract at Tottenham Hotspur expired. As reported by Alex Crook, Forster is among the names Newcastle United are considering as a third-choice goalkeeper.

That seems like the kind of role that Forster would make at this point in his career. He is 37 years of age and it is unlikely that he will get regular game time at any Premier League club right now.

Of course, he could drop down a level if he wants to play regularly before his inevitable retirement in the near future. But unfortunately, playing time has not seemed to be a priority for Forster in recent years.

Those with a keen memory will remember that Celtic were interested in signing Forster on a permanent basis in the summer of 2020. But he passed on that chance to stay on at Southampton as a backup.
