For months, Celtic fans have been pushing for change behind the scenes. Well, finally, there has been some of that this week. While the club are sticking with Wilfried Nancy for the time being, despite rumours that he was about to be sacked, a prominent figure has departed his role at Parkhead. That is none other than Peter Lawwell.

Not much needs to be said about Lawwell and the influence that he has had at Celtic over the past couple of decades or so. It has coincided with the club's most successful period at the domestic level.

Many feel that it is a result of how little competition there is in Scottish football right now, rather than how brilliantly Celtic have been run themselves. They point towards the constant failures in Europe, as much less profile clubs have been successful in getting the better of the Hoops. It is hard to remember the last time they successfully navigated the Champions League qualification phase.

Of course, there are doubts about how much genuine change will take place at the club as a result of Lawwell's departure. And also, who will be the one to replace him?

Bookmakers have come up with a list of names who could be the next chairman of Celtic. One of the favourites is Gordon Strachan.

After a legendary playing career that included stops at Leeds United, Manchester United and Aberdeen, Strachan enjoyed his biggest successes as a manager at Celtic. He won six trophies with the club, including three league titles. It is also worth pointing out that those were achieved during a time when the competition was much higher in Scotland.

It has been nearly a decade since Strachan managed. But he has been involved in behind-the-scenes roles, including at Celtic.
