The mood around Parkhead is down following Celtic's Scottish Cup final defeat at the hands of Aberdeen. The Hoops had defeated the Dons 5-1 in their own backyard just weeks ago and it feels like they allowed the treble to slip through their fingers. Perhaps it was complacency, or maybe their poor form finally caught up with them. But ultimately, it is what it is.

The fans need to look at the bigger picture. Not even Celtic can win the treble every year. A Premiership and League Cup double is still a spectacular achievement, especially in a season when their form clearly faded away over time.

Now, it is important to look towards the future. Their next aim has to be improving in the summer transfer window and making sure that they qualify for the main phase of the Champions League.

Unlike the last three seasons, the Scottish champions won't be guaranteed a spot in the Champions League's opening phase. Instead, they will have to go through the qualifiers, something that has proven very difficult for Celtic in recent times.

Celtic handed massive Champions League qualification boost

Celtic have been handed some very good news in this regard though. Rijeka have managed to win the Croatian league with a 2-0 win over Slaven Belupo.

The result means that Celtic will be seeded in the Champions League play-off in August. That massively boosts their chances of qualifying for the competition, although one cannot forget that there are no easy matchups at that point.

At the very least, Celtic will be able to avoid some very difficult matchups though. The play-off will take place over two legs and on August 19/20 and 26/27.

That gives Celtic enough time to get their transfer business done, so that they can have the team in place to hopefully qualify for the Champions League. If they do not do that, serious questions will be asked of the board and regarding their lack of ambition.
