The general belief is that it is very easy for a forward to score goals for Celtic. After all, the Hoops are the best team in Scotland by a country mile and like to play free-scoring football. Of course, there is some truth to that theory. That being said, one cannot overlook how difficult it is to maintain a place in the starting XI for the Glasgow giants, considering the pressure is to win every game and even one bad performance can see you being dropped.
One player who had joined Celtic during Brendan Rodgers' first run as the club's manager is Oliver Burke. There were high hopes around the Scottish international and the Northern Irishman predicted big things for him.
Unfortunately for Burke, Rodgers left soon after his arrival to join Leicester City. By that point, he had scored four goals for Celtic but did not score again for the club following the manager's departure.
Burke has had a bit of a journeyman career since then. But it has been revived at Werder Bremen. He is now set for another move though, having agreed a big-money deal.
Celtic flop agrees big-money summer move to German club
Burke is set to join Union Berlin in the summer, having agreed a bumper four-year deal which comes with a big pay rise. As reported by the Daily Record, Werder Bremen's director of football Clemens Fritz said:
"We regret Oliver's decision and would have liked to keep him here.
"Especially since our offer in recent discussions also met the player's previously expressed expectations and took into account the strong performances he has shown in recent weeks.
"However, there appears to be an offer that is significantly higher than ours, both financially and in terms of the contract term.
"Unfortunately, due to Oliver's decision, we no longer had the opportunity to make further adjustments.
"We have to take a holistic view of all contracts, both in terms of the player and the squad structure.
"This involves salaries, terms, and a belief in development potential.
"Despite the decision, however, we are convinced that he will give his all until the end of the season with Werder."
Of course, it is a risky decision for Burke to leave Werder Bremen, as he had found his feet at the club. But that is just the reality of life as a professional footballer.
There had been some rumours linking him with a potential return to Celtic as well, now that Rodgers is back as the club's manager. But that is not going to happen.
Still just 28 years of age, Burke is entering his prime as a footballer. So, it will be interesting to see how he does for Union Berlin next season, who clearly rate him highly to have offered him a long-term contract despite his history of inconsistent performances. Another former Celtic player, Josip Juranovic, plays for the Bundesliga club as well, having left Parkhead in early 2023 following a successful 2022 World Cup campaign with Croatia to join the German side.
