It is official, the Rangers have announced that they have parted ways with Philippe Clement. The Belgian's sacking comes after suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of St Mirren this weekend. One feels like it had been coming for a while though, as the club look set to finish trophyless again while Celtic close in on another treble.

Now, the focus will turn towards the appointment of their next manager. Will they bring in an interim boss until the end of the season before going for a long-term option in the summer? Or do they have a replacement already lined up?

Well, time shall tell. For now, there is going to be a ton of speculation around the situation and plenty of names are set to be suggested as potential candidates for the Ibrox job as the club look to catch up with Celtic.

The bookmakers have an early favourite to be the next Rangers manager though. It is none other than Steven Gerrard, who had won the Scottish Premiership with the club back in the 2020/21 season, stopping Celtic from 10IAR in the process.

Gerrard left the Rangers in the middle of the 21/22 season in order to become Aston Villa manager. It is safe to say that that did not work out.

He would then join Al-Ettifaq but it was not a successful spell either. He was shown the exit door by the club recently and as a result, he is without a role right now. So, a return to Ibrox would make a lot of sense for Gerrard at this point in time.

Many Celtic fans would like that idea as well. After all, there is this belief that Gerrard was on top when he left Ibrox. Perhaps that story needs a different ending.
