It has been a couple of weeks since Russell Martin was sacked as Rangers manager after managing just one win in seven league games, leaving them nine points adrift of Celtic and eleven behind Hearts. The Ibrox club have not been able to bring in a replacement so far, although Kevin Muscat has emerged as the firm favourite for the post.

It is worth mentioning that they find themselves in this position after both Steven Gerrard and Danny Rohl turned down the Rangers job. Muscat was not their first choice. And it looks like it might be a while before he is available, even if he ends up being appointed.

That is because the Chinese league is closing in on its finish with Muscat's Shanghai Port in the title race. So, the Rangers will need an interim manager until that is finished.

On the other hand, it looks like Kris Boyd is unwilling to give the Rangers board any credit, even if the Muscat appointment proves to be a success. He wrote in his column in The Scottish Sun:

"They’re not naming the Australian as the replacement for Russell Martin because they firmly believe that he’s got what it takes to be a success.

This is an appointment they’ve stumbled upon.

This is an appointment based on indecision and hesitancy."

Well, it is hard to argue with Boyd on that one. It remains to be seen if things will play out for Muscat or not. But if it does not, it would not come as any surprise.

The Ibrox club have a terrible record when it comes to bringing in managers. That is the reason they find themselves looking for their fifth one in four seasons.

Now, Celtic fans know that a manager should not be counted out before he has even got a chance to show that he is capable of. A lot of people did that with Ange Postecoglou and just look at how it turned out for him in Scotland, winning five trophies in just two seasons for the Hoops.

Interestingly, Muscat was the number two to Postecoglou at one point. And that is what a lot of Rangers fans seem to be banking on when it comes to his potential stint proving to be a success. Admittedly, he has an excellent record in China, Japan and Australia. That being said, we have seen him struggle in Europe in the past. He won just twice in fourteen games as Sint Truiden manager before being sacked.
