After constantly struggling throughout the course of the season, the Rangers made the decision to sack Philippe Clement at the weekend following their home defeat at the hands of St Mirren. There was a feeling of inevitability about the move and it is interesting that the Ibrox side waited this long. Celtic fans can only laugh though at the sum of money their rivals will have to shell out as the severance package.

It was in late 2023 that Clement was brought in as Rangers manager. He enjoyed some early success, even winning the League Cup. But for a long time, the team has struggled.

That did not stop the Rangers from handing Clement a long-term contract extension just earlier this season. It is safe to say that they had hoped for the Belgian to be the long-term solution for them.

That long-term extension might have been the reason why the Rangers were so reluctant to sack Clement, despite the team's struggles. Of course, the Ibrox side's financial problems are not unknown.

As reported by the Daily Record, reports last week claimed that Clement’s settlement figure was £1.2 million but the number is significantly higher. The Belgian's severance terms were upped substantially when he signed his new contract in the summer.

There have been some suggestions that Clement was ready to forgo half of his pay-off. But even if that is accurate, the belief is that he would be due a seven-figure sum.

Celtic fans can only laugh at how this entire situation has played out for the Rangers. They have now brought in the inexperienced Barry Ferguson as their head coach in hopes of steering the ship until the end of the campaign before a long-term appointment is made.
