The dust has settled on the Scottish League Cup final for Celtic. They won, adding their 119th trophy to the cabinet. The Hoops are used to winning silverware and will know the need to refocus on the competitions that are still in play. On the other hand, it looks like the Rangers are continuing to dwell on the events that took place at Hampden Park.
One of the controversial incidents on the day was when Vaclav Cerny was fouled by Liam Scales. John Beaton awarded a free-kick, with Alan Muir and Frank Connor not intervening with the decision.
Many Rangers fans, and those at the club, seem to believe that a penalty should have been awarded. And it is fine to feel that way. If the shoe was on the other foot, perhaps those at Celtic would have done the same.
The issue is the lengths that the Rangers seem to be going to make that incident central to the story of their Scottish League Cup final defeat. Not the fact that they could not get the better of a Celtic team that was nowhere near its best on the day.
Celtic fans must love Rangers' recent statement
Both referees were dropped by Willie Collum for the following weekend of fixtures but they are now set to return. Connor will run the line at Celtic's match against St Johnstone. Muir will be in the VAR room when St Mirren take on Dundee.
On their official website, Rangers have released a statement that read:
"RANGERS FC has contacted the Scottish FA to express serious concerns and ask several questions regarding the swift reinstatement of the two VAR officials involved in the officiating failure during the recent Premier Sports Cup Final. We also note one of the officials has been appointed to an SPFL Premiership match involving the club that benefitted from the error."
Celtic fans should be happy with the fact that the focus at Ibrox seems to be on a decision that was debatable at best rather than thinking of ways to catch up with the champions. Of course, the Hoops themselves have been somewhat underwhelming in recent weeks and need to rediscover the blistering form they showcased earlier on in the campaign.
