Ange Postecoglou will always have the love and respect of Celtic fans. What he achieved during his time as the club's manager was extraordinary. Now, many might say that bringing five trophies to Parkhead in two years is not all that uncommon these days. But what made it special were the circumstances in which he had arrived in Glasgow.
Celtic had not only finished trophyless the season before but also had 25 points less than the Rangers in the league. On top of that, key players like Odsonne Edouard, Scott Brown, Kris Ajer and Ryan Christie left that summer.
Postecoglou certainly was not handed an easy task. He had a paper-thin squad filled with players who had been brought in that very summer.
Most had thought that it would take at least a couple of years for Celtic to be competitive with the Rangers again. They would go on to win the Premiership that very season alongside the Scottish League Cup. In the following campaign, they did the treble before Postecoglou left to become Tottenham Hotspur manager.
Celtic fans will love Ange Postecoglou's comment before Rangers game
Postecoglou returns to Glasgow this week. His Tottenham Hotspur side will take on the Rangers at Ibrox. The Aussie boss will have happy memories from the venue.
Celtic fans will love Postecoglou's comment about empty stadiums ahead of the game against the Rangers. As reported by The Herald, he said:
"I always kind of reflect, and we've all lived it, is that once you experience football in empty stadiums, you realise how meaningless it is. I fell through that whole period.
"It was meaningless. As much as you go, you could be hostile tomorrow, but that's what we love about the game. That's what brings it to life, ultimately."
Of course, the Rangers' Premiership success under the management of Steven Gerrard had come when the season had been played without fans in attendance. Many Celtic supporters have felt that things would have played out differently under normal circumstances.
As for Postecoglou, he knows his Tottenham Hotspur team need a result at Ibrox. They are in terrible form at the moment and a win would take some pressure off the Aussie manager.
