International breaks can often be quiet on the club news front. The next week or so could prove the exception. Celtic fans can sit back a little though and follow up on board discussions as once again the spotlight falls on the goings-on at Ibrox, with the Rangers trying to find themselves a new manager for the fourth consecutive season.
Of course, the big story in the run-up to two important Scotland games is the aftermath of Russell Martin's sacking as Rangers manager. Inevitably, the fans and media are lining up potential candidates for the role.
You'd also imagine that a few potential options might be backing off after seeing how things turn out for Martin after the Falkirk match. He was only in charge for 123 days.
Two candidates have been standing out among the lists being drawn up. Both have strong connections that link them to the role. Those connections seem stronger than either's recent managerial successes.
Celtic fans laugh as Rangers managerial candidate ruled out already
The two main names suggested to be in the frame have been Steven Gerrard and Sean Dyche. But the latest news suggests one of those has slipped out of contention already.
Gerrard is an obvious fan favourite, if you discount the fact that many were happy to see him walk at the end of his previous tenure at Ibrox. Of course, things like that are often overlooked and forgotten, aren't they?
Dyche has links from his time at Everton with Kevin Thelwell. He would certainly bring some toughening up of the squad and perhaps a more route one approach than Martin’s preferred passing plays that led nowhere. But a move seems to be off the table already.
As reported by the Rangers Review, Dyche will not be considered for the vacant managerial position at Rangers. He is not in line to be reunited with Thelwell at Ibrox.
It is going to be a tough task for anyone stepping into Martin’s shoes, or more likely bringing their own brown brogues to the role. Rangers fans, in drawing up their own lists, have a list of preferences for a new boss.
If it is to be Gerrard again, the recruitment team will have to ignore his record at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq. They may also need to avoid looking too closely at his Ibrox record with just that single trophy win out of nine attempts.
