Who will be the next Rangers manager? That is the question that has been doing the rounds of the Scottish footballing circle after Russell Martin was shown the exit door over the weekend, following the 1-1 draw against Falkirk. It saw the Ibrox side fall 11 points behind Hearts and nine behind Celtic in the Premiership title race.
Martin could very well go down as the worst manager in the Rangers' history. He won one of his seven games in the league and had some terrible results in Europe as well, including a 9-1 aggregate loss at the hands of Club Brugge.
Now, it remains to be seen who they end up appointing to take Martin's place in the Ibrox hot seat and try and fix things. A clear favourite seems to be emerging in this respect though.
That man is none other than Steven Gerrard. As reported by Football Insider, Mick Brown said about the situation:
"I think Gerrard is the clear front-runner when you’re looking at the names on their list."
'Clear front-runner' - Rangers next manager favourite named, Celtic fans react
Well, it would not come as a surprise if Gerrard was indeed the first choice for the Rangers, when it comes to their search for their next manager. It is worth remembering that he was the one who stopped 10IAR, by winning the league title. Nobody other than him has even come close.
That being said, that league triumph came under special circumstances and inside empty stadiums. And a lot of Celtic fans would not mind seeing Gerrard back in the Ibrox hot seat, if you judge it from social media reactions from them.
It remains to be seen if the move does end up happening or not. Gerrard has not had a great time in management since he left the Rangers the first time around. And it is also worth remembering that he won only one title in Scotland in over three years.
