Daizen Maeda was Celtic's best player this season and by a country mile at that. He scored 33 goals and had 12 assists to his name as well in just 51 appearances. Those are phenomenal numbers, especially for someone who played the majority of the campaign as a winger. So, it is easy to understand why clubs around Europe have taken notice.
Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce are one team that seem keen to sign Maeda from Celtic this summer. And it looks like they are accelerating their plans to bring the Japanese striker to the Turkish league.
Of course, Celtic fans will want to see Maeda remain at Parkhead. But there is always the understanding that the club would let pretty much any player leave, as long as the right offer is on the table. In this case, it might not be.
As reported by Fotomac, Fenerbahce will sit down with Celtic officials regarding Maeda. Their management will present an offer of over €10 million for the 27-year-old Japanese international.
Celtic fans left stunned by how much Fenerbahce will offer for Daizen Maeda
It is hard to imagine that that would anywhere near enough to convince Celtic to part ways with Maeda. As one fan wrote upon hearing the rumour: "10m!!!!! what game do they want him for?"
Celtic did bring in a higher transfer fee for Kyogo in the winter. The Japanese forward was older than Maeda and nowhere near that kind of form.
Maeda is 27 years of age, and is only entering his prime. Also, when it comes to him, it is not just about the numbers. He is celebrated for the work-rate and pressing ability that he brings to any team. It should take a record fee to convince Celtic to part ways with him this summer. Certainly a lot moe than €10 million.
