Toni Kroos is one of the best midfielders in the history of the game. He retired at the end of last season, after winning the Champions League with Real Madrid and playing one final tournament with the German national team. In the past, the World Cup winner has had positive things to say about Celtic and the Parkhead atmosphere.

But Kroos was clearly not impressed with Celtic and their performance against Borussia Dortmund. The Hoops lost 7-1 at Signal Iduna Park in the Champions League recently.

Some of Kroos' recent comments will not go down well with the Hoops supporters though. That is because the German legend went on to describe Celtic as 'a second-class opponent' when talking about the Borussia Dortmund game.

As reported by The Celtic Way, Kroos said on his podcast that he co-hosts with his brother Felix:

"I think the last week was the classic example of a Borussia Dortmund week.

"They won 7-1 in the Champions League - even if it has to be said that it was against a second-class opponent.

"And then they went to play a Bundesliga game at the weekend and put in a typically poor performance and lost."

It is safe to say that most Celtic fans recognise that the Hoops were nowhere near good enough in the game against Borussia Dortmund. They seemed naive in their approach and will need to adjust better when up against top-level European opposition.

That being said, they will not like to see things put so bluntly by a personality of Kroos' magnitude. But perhaps that is unavoidable if they keep on performing like this in Europe's most prestigious competition.

Of course, losing to Borussia Dortmund would have been fine, especially away from home. But the manner in which Celtic lost is unacceptable.

It is not a rare instance either. They lost 5-1 against Kroos' Real Madrid away at the Santiago Bernabeu a couple of years back. Last season, they were handed a 6-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid. So, it is quite clear that Celtic need to improve against high-profile opposition.
