It is pretty clear that Wilfried Nancy has now emerged as the outright favourite to become the next Celtic manager. The Frenchman has been a success story in the MLS but he has no experience of managing in Europe. And that is not the only reason that the supporters will be worried, if this appointment does end up being made.
Now, it would be a mistake to count Nancy out, just because he has not managed in Europe. Many made the same mistake with Ange Postecoglou and look at the success story he proved to be.
The bigger worries might be about how much say he will have regarding the club's activities. This might be a case of Celtic looking to bring in a head coach rather than a manager.
As reported by The Guardian, Nancy fits the desired Celtic profile of an emerging coach. They believe he can progress within their system and accept transfer policies.
Celtic fans handed transfer worry if Wilfried Nancy becomes manager
This will clearly be the biggest opportunity of Nancy's career so far. So, it is not hard to see why he might be willing to accept a lot of terms that a lot of experienced and proven managers might not.
Is this the reason why Celtic seem comfortable going for an experienced manager even under these difficult circumstances? Is this the club looking for a 'yes man' after how things ended with Rodgers?
We do not know the answer to those questions, to be honest. On paper, Postecoglou would easily be viewed as a potential 'yes man' as well, when he arrived in the summer of 2021. But he clearly had a lot of say in the club's transfer activity and was much better at finding players than Rodgers ever was. So, let's wait and watch how this plays instead of reaching any conclusions.
