Despite making it clear that he would want to continue as the Rangers' manager, the club recently announced that Barry Ferguson will be leaving his post at the end of this season. So, a new boss will be in the Ibrox dugout in the 25/26 campaign as they look to find a way to stop Celtic's winning machine. Brendan Rodgers' side are on the verge of another treble.
Ferguson actually did well in games against Celtic. His side ended an almost five-year wait, winning at Parkhead, and followed that up with a draw at Ibrox. He also got the better of Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce side over two legs.
But realistically, Ferguson was never expected to get the job. Especially not after he won just 6 of the 15 games he was in charge of the Rangers.
Celtic fans seem to be delighted with the first-choice to get that Ibrox role on a permanent basis next. As reported by the Daily Mail (via The Scotsman), Gerrard has emerged as the frontrunner with Rangers said to be favouring a manager who already has first-hand experience in the dugout.
Celtic fans delighted as Rangers' preferred next manager named
Of course, Gerrard won the league title with the Rangers before leaving for Aston Villa. He was sacked by the Premier League club and ended up at Al-Ettifaq. But the Liverpool legend's run there did not last long either and he is currently without a club, making things easier for the Glasgow team.
Celtic fans might be happy to see Gerrard back in the Ibrox dugout as well. One wrote: "Superb, bring him home. Oh Stevie Stevie."
Another added: "Please happen. Pleeeeease."
When Gerrard left Ibrox, the general view was that he had Rangers sitting atop the Scottish game. A return would give Celtic the chance to change that last impression. Also, many appear to have forgotten that he won only one trophy in over three seasons with the Ibrox side.
