Celtic need to have a third-choice striker in their squad to provide backup to Kyogo Furuhashi and Adam Idah. Both of them are excellent options and can start on any given day. That being said, an injury to either would leave Brendan Rodgers' side short on options up front. That is the last thing you need considering the congested schedule that the Hoops have, as they compete in all three domestic competitions and aim to advance in the Champions League.
Many have suggested Daniel Cummings should be handed the third striker spot after his excellent form at the youth and developmental levels. He has scored 22 times in 20 games but is yet to be handed his Celtic debut.
That has led to speculation over his future. So, getting some playing time might make it more likely for Cummings to stay at Celtic.
But it looks like it is somebody else who could fill that vacant spot. As reported by Mail Sport's Stephen McGowan (via The Celtic Star), Brendan Rodgers is considering integrating Johnny Kenny as a third-choice striking option to supplement Kyogo and Idah while developing.
Celtic eyeing 13-goal forward as their third striker
Kenny has scored 13 goals and provided 3 assists in 29 league games for Shamrock Rovers this season. And it looks like the 21-year-old's productivity has convinced Rodgers that he is ready to have a squad role at Celtic.
Kenny was signed by Celtic a few years back from Sligo Rovers. It looks like he could now be heading for the next step in his career after loan spells away from Parkhead.
One has to wonder what integrating Kenny as the third option behind Kyogo and Idah would mean for the future of Cummings. That could lead him to leave the club and move down south, like so many Celtic youngsters have done in recent years.
