Last month, there were suggestions that Brendan Rodgers was interested in bringing back Kristoffer Ajer. Of course, Celtic are no strangers to reuniting with former players, especially recently. Jota completed a return to Parkhead in the winter, after failed stints at Al-Ittihad and Rennes. Kieran Tierney will be making a comeback in the summer when his contract at Arsenal runs out.
Ajer had been a stalwart for Celtic during his time at the club. He left in the summer of 2021 to join Brentford and has been a consistent contributor for the Bees since then as they have established themselves in the Premier League.
So, how would Celtic sign a player who is getting consistent playing time in the Premier League and is 26 years of age? Well, Brentford do seem to be interested in someone currently plying his trade at Parkhead.
Brentford reportedly want to sign Nicolas Kuhn from Celtic in the summer. That could help facilitate a move back to Glasgow for Ajer.
Celtic's chances of signing Kris Ajer from Brentford boosted
In the winter, we saw Jota return to Rennes while Kyogo joined the French Ligue 1 side. While the two deals were separate, one has to imagine that neither one would have transpired on its own and they were linked.
Similarly, could we see Kuhn join Brentford in the summer while Ajer heads in the opposite direction? Of course, a lot will depend on the Norwegian defender and whether he even wants to return to the club at this point in his career. Never say never in football though.
One cannot overlook the rumours linking Cameron Carter-Vickers with a move away from Celtic as well. If the American centre-back does indeed leave, the Hoops will need to go out and bring in a proper replacement for him. Ajer fits the bill.
