Celtic might find themselves in search of another centre-back this summer. Auston Trusty was signed from Sheffield United last time around but the American international has failed to nail down a spot in the starting XI and might be behind Liam Scales in the pecking order now. On the other hand, there are quite a few others who could be on their way out.
Stephen Welsh and Gustaf Lagerbielke are out on loan right now, and a permanent exit in the summer might be the best step for them. On the other hand, Maik Nawrocki has done well when given a chance but continues to struggle for opportunities when others are fit and available. So, perhaps it is time for him to part ways as well.
So many centre-back exits at the same time might mean that Celtic need to bring in someone this summer. And they might have the perfect opportunity in that respect.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Jan Bednarek has a release clause in his contract at Southampton that is now active after their relegation was confirmed. It is worth £6 million with several clubs attentive to this opportunity.
Celtic can sign centre-back as Fabrizio Romano confirms £6m news
This might definitely be a chance worth considering if you are Celtic. Bednarek is a proven Premier League defender who is also a regular at the international level for Poland.
Also, there are several areas where he thrives. Bednarek is 92nd percentile among centre-backs when it comes to his passing completion percentage, 92nd percentile on clearances and 98th percentile when it comes to interceptions.
So, there is a lot to like about him, that is for sure. And most importantly, he is available for a transfer fee that Celtic can go out and spend in the summer transfer window.
