We are now in prime summer transfer rumours territory. Speculation is rife about possible exits and signings and Celtic fans eagerly await news of who might join their squad for the next season. There are several exciting prospects the club is linked with. And some other names that perhaps aren’t as thrilling.
Celtic have several centre-backs on their books currently. It has been expected for a while though that we would see some of those move out. With Maik Nawrocki, Gustaf Lagerbielke, and Stephen Welsh being the likely candidates to make an exit.
There is talk of Cameron Carter-Vickers being interested in a move too. Auston Trusty has yet to firm up his place in the starting lineup with Liam Scales seemingly preferred ahead of him.
Trusty seems likely to remain for at least another season to show what he can do. Though the pressure will be on for him to deliver.
Celtic-linked centre-back could divide fans
That all means Brendan Rodgers is likely to have at least one centre-back on his summer shopping list. The club will be linked with many prospects for that position, but one in particular will keep appearing in the media. Especially with the news that he is likely to be seeking a new club for next season.
Scott McKenna signed for Las Palmas last summer, but the Spanish side were relegated from La Liga. It’s unlikely he’ll want to remain there.
According to Udlaspalmas.net, it’s believed that McKenna is among a group of Las Palmas players who have a relegation release clause in their contracts. He, alongside fellow Scot Ollie McBurnie at the Spanish club, is likely to be able to make a move away.
Thankfully it’s unlikely McBurnie will be linked, but a possible move to Celtic for McKenna will certainly attract attention. He has been rumoured to be of interest in previous windows.
As mentioned earlier, not all prospective signings will inspire the fans. McKenna will divide views, he is a solid, experienced defender and would do well in the SPFL. He does play at a higher level with Scotland, but it’s hard to see him being a step up in quality for the Champions League.
There may be a role for McKenna at the club. But if that is to come in as backup to preferred first choices, it doesn’t seem a role that would interest the player at this stage. We’ll have to wait to see how the story plays out this summer.
