It seems only a matter of time before the Rangers undergo a takeover by an American consortium involving the San Francisco 49ers. The Ibrox fans seem to be hoping that this is the magic spell that they need to close down the gap with Celtic, who are closing in on their fourth-straight league title and sixth treble in nine seasons.
Of course, a takeover could mean added investment into the Rangers' squad in hopes of catching up with Celtic. So, should Hoops fans be worried about the situation?
One would think not. Takeovers do not always translate to success on the pitch. Just ask a club like Chelsea, who have taken several steps back since their change in ownership despite investing over a billion pounds into the squad. It is about getting things right.
Brendan Rodgers does not seem to be particularly concerned about the Rangers' impending takeover. As reported by the Daily Record, the Celtic manager said:
"If there is investment going into Rangers then great, that will be good for their supporters and good for the club. But my focus is very much on Celtic."
Celtic boss makes bold claim about 49ers' Rangers takeover
Rodgers is an exceptional manager and we have seen him compete against teams with bigger budgets in the past. Just look at what he achieved during his time at Leicester City, getting them into Europe on more than one occasion and winning the FA Cup and the Community Shield as well.
So, he should not be concerned about added investment into the Rangers. That being said, Celtic should be prepared to go toe-to-toe and make sure that the Ibrox club are not outdoing them in the transfer market.
Celtic are in a strong financial position at the moment and there is nothing to worry about. Still, this is a situation worth keeping an eye on. Let's see how it all tranpires. The takeover is expected to go through by the end of May.
