Central defence is one area Celtic needed to strengthen even coming into this summer transfer window. That need has only been magnified following the departures of Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki, while an offer is on the table for Stephn Welsh to leave as well. On the other hand though, the Hoops are working to bring some centre-backs to the club.
A loan deal has been agreed with Manchester City for Jahmai Simpson-Pusey. And before that move has even been officially announced, the Hoops are being linked with another centre-back.
Of course, Simpson-Pusey's stint at Celtic Park will only be temporary. The Scottish champions need a long-term solution there as well.
As reported by Alan Nixon (via The Scottish Sun), Celtic are monitoring Viktor Eriksson of Hammarby. The Swedish centre-back is available at a bargain £2 million.
'Available at a bargain' - Celtic want another defender after Man City deal
Eriksson is a towering figure, standing at 6 ft 4 in. Of course, that is a type of profile that Celtic have been linked with a few times this summer.
Etienne Youte of Le Havre and Justin de Haas of Famalicao have similar physical traits as well. So, it does look like Brendan Rodgers is hoping to add some size and physicality in the heart of defence, something that Celtic have missed at times in recent years.
It is believed that Rodgers has sent the club's top scout Paul Tidsdale to watch Eriksson in action against Belgian side Charleroi on Thursday night. It remains to be seen if the scouting mission leads to anywhere of note.
One has to admit that this is a positive sign that Celtic are not happy with signing just one more centre-back this summer, that too on loan. Let's hope they bring in another as soon as possible.
