Brendan Rodgers' resignation certainly appears to be a historic step at Celtic. And it will be very interesting to see how things go from here. There clearly was not a long-term backup plan in place at the club. That is why, they have brought back a 73-year-old Martin O'Neill back to take interim charge of the Hoops alongside Shaun Maloney, who has had a terrible start to life as a manager.
It is unclear how long this interim run will go for O'Neill at Celtic. But there is a possibility that it could drag on until the end of the season.
One can only hope that that does not happen. But O'Neill is putting a coaching team around him right now. And another former Celtic man is set to join him at Parkhead.
As reported by The Scottish Sun, Mark Fotheringham has joined Celtic’s interim coaching staff. He will be part of O'Neill's backroom team.
Another former Celtic man set to make return to join Martin O'Neill's team
Fotheringham came through the youth ranks at Celtic. He even played under the management of O'Neill but was never quite able to make it at Parkhead. He would leave in 2003 and went on to have a journeyman career that saw him feature for a long list of clubs, which includes, Fulham, Norwich City, SC Freiburg and about a dozen others.
Fotheringham has had a spell as the manager of Huddersfield Town too, but it only lasted 21 games. Other than that, he has had coaching roles at teams like Hertha Berlin and Swansea City.
So, he is an experienced coach. Is this a sign that Celtic are preparing for this to be a relatively long interim period? The last time the club found itself in a position like this, or somewhat similar, they allowed John Kennedy to coach the team until the end of the season.
